~200ha of mixed native woodlands have been planted in Phases 1 (2018) and 2 (2021). These projects focused on planting sites that were treeless but had good potential for woodland. Phase 3, as drafted (see maps below), sets out to enhance the condition of existing mature woodland. Adjacent to Ardtornish House and Achranich, Blocks C and D will connect and extend woodland fragments. At the suggestion of NatureScot, we have also made a proposal to address an area of the Morvern woods SAC which is in particularly unfavorable condition. This area of SAC is included in Block G.
Unlike Phases 1 and 2, is our hope that natural regen (trees establishing directly from local seed) will play a key role in Phase 3 and the expansion and connection of these woodland fragments. Indeed, our survey work has identified an abundance of seedlings representing a range of tree species. If given adequate protection from deer browsing these should establish quickly. To satisfy the mapping requirements of Scottish Forestry we have indicated the area where natural regen is most likely (seed source trees within 50m). This identifies a natural regen area of 60 ha. In reality, we hope regen will be more extensive.
We propose to complement this natural regen with 90 ha of planting, mainly in areas further from a seed source. Sessile Oak, Aspen, Grey Willow, Eared Willow, Rowan, Alder, Downy Birch
If we can source small quantities of the following from an appropriate seed source, these may also be included; Hazel, Holly, Bird Cherry, Hawthorn, Blackthorn
We are very enthusiastic about these plans and hope that they are well received in the community.
