We are excited to announce the upcoming installation of large woody debris (windblown tree stumps!) on the River Aline, an exciting initiative to restore and enhance our local ecosystems and improve the catchment’s climate resilience!

The work is being undertaken as part of the Aline Catchment Restoration Project funded by NatureScot, and is being delivered by Ardtornish, with expert and technical support from Envirocentre and McLaren’s.

Key Dates:

Machine Arrival: 19th July Installation Work Begins: 22nd July

Putting woody debris in the river is a technique used across Scotland in river restoration where rivers lack trees and shrubs on their banks. The stumps create habitat for aquatic and terrestrial species such as fish, invertebrates, and plants; they also stabilise river banks and beds, helping to reduce erosion by slowing down water flow.

The stumps will also create varied flow in the river, including pools and riffles, which are important for the life cycles of many organisms including providing spawning and rearing habitats for fish. They also introduce nutrients into the river system, which supports the growth of microorganisms and plants.

Please be aware that there will be machinery work along the river on a stretch half a mile south of Uileann Bridge during this period. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we undertake these important restoration efforts.
